Love, Actually

No time to read? No problem! Enjoy an audio version of this post below!

I attended a gala night last with the theme: Agape — The Love of God for Man and Man for God — from a young adult perspective and I had so much fun! I can’t remember the last time I dressed up in a gown or attended a formal event.

Prior to the gala, I’d been chatting with a friend who told me, “God will meet you at your level of need.” As the night progressed, I felt a prompting to release old hurts. I hugged people I would normally walk past. I accepted what hadn’t worked out in my favor. I reaffirmed the things I knew for sure. I saw that certain blessings only come when you’re willing to be flexible. God had given me what I needed: a heart expansion.

Our guest speaker closed out the night with a few thoughts on love and I want to share them with you:

  1. Accept that the way you love/have been loved could be wrong. Open yourself up to give and experience something different. Completely discard what you think you know.
  2. Monitor how you use the word ‘love.’ Love comes from God and God is love; yet you wouldn’t say, “I God you” or “I God cake.” In other words, the sincerity around the word diminishes when used too liberally. Love what truly matters and mean it when you say it.
  3. Love anyway. The spirit of agape love is such that it maintains its position no matter what it experiences. That’s the way God loves us and how He expects us to love one another.

In moments of self-reflection, I keep circling back to how beautifully God orchestrates all things. Just when I think I can step back and see the big picture, another puzzle piece floats into the frame and fits itself onto the board. Then I go right back to rewiring my brain and reimagining that new piece with the rest of what has been revealed. If we saw a glimpse of the sheer amount of planning God puts into making sure we’re learning, growing and thriving in the right direction, we wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss His guidance.

I am eternally grateful.
