Stepping Out On Faith: A Correction

  • Stepping out on faith is the buzzphrase of this millennial age. Everyone is doing it or telling others to do it. But there’s an element no one shares.
  • Not to be black and white here but in order to properly step out on faith, you should’ve heard a word, received an instruction or properly read a sign from God.[1]
  • Stepping out on faith isn’t copying what you see God do for someone else in hopes you’ll get the same outcome.
  • Stepping out on faith isn’t claiming a Bible verse that God hasn’t told you to stand on regarding your specific issue. [2]

In fact, when I was thinking about this, Holy Spirit ministered that this “stepping out on faith” business was actually a temptation Jesus faced in the wilderness. Satan told Jesus to throw Himself [3] off a pinnacle and quoted the promise of Psalm 91: 11 – 12. Jesus was like, “no, absolutely not” and responded, “It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” Deuteronomy 6:16. Jesus wasn’t going to do a single thing God hadn’t instructed Him to do.

  • So there it is. Try to make sure your step of faith is backed by God and if necessary, allow a period to time to confirm what you heard God say.

Explanations of the footnotes

[1] I remember a season in my life where I was in a job I HATED. So much weirdness was going on there. Additionally, I’d started breaking the Sabbath by coming in to make extra money. I went into prayer and fasting to find out if I should quit. Perhaps, because I was new to the faith and/or unaware of the lengths the devil was taking to keep me in confusion, I couldn’t get a clear answer. Finally, I laid out all the “evidence, facts and figures” (aka, I read the signs to the best of my ability) and decided God couldn’t possibly want me to stay. I gave notice. That left the matter of new employment. I told God that He needed to provide me with a new job while I was wrapping up my last two weeks. Oh and I told Him that I wasn’t going to look for a job either; He would have to bring one to me. And that’s exactly what happened.

[I used to wonder where that faith came from but now I know.] I was so desperate not to have a repeat of my current situation that I created an environment where it was impossible for me to take matters into my own hands. I removed myself and any action I could take, from the equation. That allowed God to take full control of the wheel. If anything happened, I would then know for sure it was Him.

[2] A lot of Christians don’t realize that for certain things (or maybe for all things, who knows), you actually should ask God what verse to stand on for your specific situation. I know a young woman who was having some health issues. Everyone told her to claim the story of the woman with the issue of blood. When she asked the Lord, He gave her a random verse in Deuteronomy. That made me laugh so hard. That is SO like God.

[3] Throw Himself off the pinnacle. LITERALLY, step out on faith.

Edit 8/15/2020

  1. For those who don’t understand what is meant by “properly reading a sign” by God, the Holy Spirit supplied the example of Abraham and Lot. Abraham never heard God tell him or instruct him to separate himself from Lot but: his herdsmen and Lot’s herdsmen were fighting. All the land was open and available before them so why continue on in conflict? Abraham read the signs and applied godly wisdom.
  2. Today, God expanded on the idea of stepping out on faith. (Start the video at 1:08:10). It blew my mind because I thought this correction was cut and dry. But I love that He shared this other facet of the jewel with me. Now I see EVEN MORE CLEARLY why Jesus refused to listen to the devil. Let me know if you see it as well.
